Its based upon an earlier painting, which is often attributed to Florentine painter, Carlo Dolci (1616 1686). The painting gained its unusual name simply due to the appearance of Marys thumb from beneath her deep blue veil. Its unclear why this was originally painted in but likely to relate to religious iconography. This
