17th-Century, Madonna Del Dito Belgium As a sign of respectThis gentle portrayal of the Virgin Mary dates to the late 17th century and depicts Our Lady Of The Thumb or Madonna Del Dito. Its based upon an earlier painting, which is often attributed to Florentine painter, Carlo Dolci (1616 1686). The painting gained its unusual name simply due to the appearance of Marys thumb from beneath her deep blue veil. Its unclear why this was originally painted in but likely to relate to religious iconography. This
